The Impact of Online Social Networking on Student Mental Health

Abstract

Paper Outline (Brittany) Introduction Background: The advancing technology has exposed students to social network addiction adversely affecting their mental well being thus the need to explore this topic to understand the extent damage and how to control it. Research question: Impact of online social network on student’s mental heath Thesis: After analyzing literature review from different scholars, it has been confirmed that online social networking adversely affects students’ mental health thus the need to impose measures to ensure its controlled use amongst students. Body Main Idea #1: Analysis of the negative effects that social networking has on mental health Supporting evidence: While addressing this issue, Schønning et al. (2020) argued that as much as social networking offer a certain level of pleasure and satisfaction to the users, it adversely affect their mental well being due to addictions. Supporting evidence: Most students cannot survive without glancing on their phones, laptops among other forms of devices that can lead them to social networks and such practices affect their mental stability, (Deeper et al ., 2020) Main Idea #2: Detrimental consequences of social networking on mental health. Supporting evidence: Schønning et al. (2020) argues that there are lesser discrepancies in the nature of these effects thus any user becomes vulnerable to the adverse effects. Supporting evidence: Sadness, anxiety among other pressures that align with online social networking do more damage to these student’s mind than good as their mind is still growing thus limited controls on its usage (Gupta, Jogdand & Kumar, 2022).
