Discussion One: Consumer Culture in the 1920s The most interesting cultural change in the United States in the 1920s is the development of the modern consumer behavior. In the 1920s, Americans developed a consumer culture that focused on the purchase of cars, stylish cloths, and household appliances. This change had a significant impact on the Americans and their behavior particularly in regards to financial objectivity (Welch 75). Most people focused on gaining resources to improve the quality of their lives through consumption. The drive for people to work hard, invest, and save was motivated primarily by their consumption goals. The shift in consumption in the United States was significant since it affected the issue of conflict in the country. From the 1920s, people were more concerned about purchasing personal appliances and stylish items than they were about the existing cultural tensions in the country. Additionally, the cultural change caused a twist in the country after the economic collapse in the 1920s. A new conflict associated with the social and economic classes developed as individuals attempted to deal with their own financial status in different ways. The consumption culture in the United States had significant implications that have continued to shape class relations in the country to date. The consumer culture is manifested by the development of social and political conflicts based on economic classes. Americans support policies that will benefit the people in their class or in the class they intend to be part of in the near future. The political economy of the United States is based on the existence of people from different income groups whose views are affected by issues such as income, access to housing, and insurance.
