Abstract
An Essential Guide to Public Speaking Chapter 5 [Name] Why might it be easier or more difficult for you to speak extemporaneously rather than to read a manuscript? According to Schultze (2020), speaking extemporaneously does not just happen; it demands practice to become effective. Manuscript speakers rely on written notes. Such speakers enjoy the privilege of reference during their presentation, which in one way or another sounds simple: compiling such written materials in mind and presenting them without confirming from any written piece. However, manuscript speakers are boring as they lecture or preach on a topic instead of speaking to the target audience. In such a case though a simple way of presenting a particular topic, manuscript speakers may lose the attention of the target audiences, which extemporaneous speakers always enjoy in totality. Impromptu speaking is the art of speaking without notes. Instead, the speaker speaks from an outline. It is an approach that demands the speaker to learn and express defined potentials in the audiences' memorization, elaboration, reflection and affirmation. Acquiring these skills and using them during presentation proves a challenge, making extemporaneous speaking a little difficult compared to manuscript speaking. However, after learning and understanding the abovementioned skills, an extemporaneous speaker delivers with ease as speaking without notes engages audiences who reflect on what the speaker says and enhance their urge on what to expect from the next point. It is imperative to note that practice defines the success of extemporaneous speaking. When a speaker can make an on-point outline color-coded to enhance a glance at a critical point, such an approach enhances memory, making extemporaneous speaking effective. A rare glance at the outline allows the speaker to revive the memory without creating doubts about the delivery and understanding of the topic to the target audience. Without practice and knowledge in demanded skills, extemporaneous speaking remains the most challenging approach to presenting a speech leading many speakers to embrace manuscript speaking. For this, one can conclude that, though demanding as it requires the acquisition and application of extemporaneous skills, extemporaneous speaking defines the potential of a speaker to serve the needs of the target audience without expressing any doubt or fear while on stage. From your experiences listening to manuscripts versus extemporaneous preaching or teaching, which type is more effective? Why? Preachers are bound to express their potential in delivering their text to the target audience. However, unlike any other form of speech or presentation, preachers, in most instances, follow scheduled scripts for specific occasions, which to some extent, do not address the current needs of the target audiences. However, regardless of the script the preacher chooses or has been chosen to serve the day's intentions, the ability to deliver the written message to suit the needs of the target audiences is the key. Having listened to many preachers in my church, I can confirm that extemporaneous preaching outsmarts manuscript preaching both in delivering the written message and getting the followers' attention. Often, preachers just read through the script and keep repeating the exact words as they often confirm from the script what was written on which line. Such an approach limits their potential to elaborate on the message through real-life experiences and, in most instances, spends a lot of time trying to figure out the right words to associate with the written lines. However, knowledgeable priests who believe in serving others with the word of their mouth express preparedness in their presentation through a rare glance at their outlines, whether on phones or in small notebooks. Such pastors engage their followers with real-life experiences and biblical stories that connect with the day's reading; some even use songs that rhyme with the script. Such preachers employ an extemporaneous approach that allows them to engage audiences by affirming their responses, making the preaching session lively and educative. The same case goes for teaching as manuscript teachers seem to lose focus on their topic, forcing them to repeat, omit and even become stranded during their presentation. Such an approach bores the learners making much drift away during such sessions or even expressing burnout in extreme cases. However, with extemporary teaching, the speaker can express defined knowledge of the topic under consideration, making the target audience feel the need to listen and respond verbally and non-verbally, making the session lively. As Schultze (2020) cites, I also confirm that extemporary speaking enhances a conversing environment during a presentation, while manuscript speaking remains one-sided. What is...
