Abstract
[Name] The sport psychologist can employ cognitive-behavioral therapy as a potential evidence-based strategy to help mark manage and overcome the sudden surge in stress and anxiety (Hanin, 1). Through cognitive restructuring, the sports psychologists will be able to identify and challenge the negative or irrational thoughts that are related to Marks performance. To this effect, the psychologist can request Mark to work with him to replace such thoughts with more realistic and positive ones thus lowering the levels of stress and anxiety and focusing on golfing performance. Under CBT, the psychologist can also employ stress inoculation training to help Mark manage the noted stress and anxiety levels. Through this approach, Mark can develop coping skills through learning new relaxation techniques like deep breathing as well as progressive muscle relaxation. Such coping skills will be of use during high-pressure situations in the course of golf practices which in return will enhance realization of better performances. The sports psychologist can also employ mindfulness and meditation strategies where the mindfulness-based stress reduction approach will help Mark become more aware of his thoughts and emotions without any form of judgment (Hussey and Arash, 2). It is a strategy that will help Mark maintain focus and composure on his golfing mission. Self-talk management is another strategy that the sports psychologist can use to help Mark cope with the surge in stress and anxiety. While considering positive self-talk, the psychologist can encourage positive and constructive self-talk to boost Marks confidence as well as reduce the noted self-imposed pressure. Since the sports psychologist has the ability to identify and replace negative-talk patterns, such abilities will help Mark find relief and be able to focus with the golf course without any form of panic.
