Abstract
SOCIAL PSYC CLASS Week 7 discussion firednships and relationships EMELY Social networking services like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook have undeniably transformed our relationship landscape. In my view, these platforms can both increase and degrade social connections. They span geographical gaps, allowing us to stay connected with faraway friends and relatives. For instance, I reconnected with a childhood friend on Facebook, reigniting a bond that had eroded due to distance. However, there's a word of caution. These platforms can occasionally offer shallow relationships, replacing deeper, face-to-face encounters. The chosen highlights on social media can often lead to feelings of inadequacy. In essence, while these sites provide vital connectivity tools, it's crucial to use them as supplements, not replacements, for true conversations. DASAN In my opinion, I think that social media definitely can enhance social interactions between individuals, but it can also, in my opinion, weaken these interactions as well. I think that this can strengthen the relationships by allowing individuals to interact with one another via the internet from long distances apart. This can prove beneficial for individuals that are in parts of the country, or even abroad. I do think that social media interactions can be harmful however, as there are dangers on the internet of stalking, grooming, and illegal pornography being done through social media. Also, I think that being able to so easily connect with someone via the internet can be encouraging to younger individuals to not engage in in-person forms of contact with one another. CULTURAL PSYCH CLASS Week 7 discussion 1: case study final presentation (SENDING SOON) Week 7 Discussion 2: current events in culture GABBY Media Source and Title: Increasing discrimination against Asian Americans a major concern https://apnorc.org/projects/increasing-discrimination-against-asian-americans-a-major-concern/?doing_wp_cron=[phone].[phone][phone]25 (source: NORC) Summary: The media source reports on the rising concern of discrimination against Asian Americans, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. A majority of Americans, including various racial and ethnic groups, believe that discrimination against Asian Americans has increased over the past year. Additionally, a significant portion of Asian Americans feel unsafe in public due to their race. The article also mentions that President Biden signed the COVID-19 Hate Crime Bill, aimed at addressing violence and discrimination against Asian Americans. There are notable partisan differences in the level of concern, with Democrats being more concerned than Republicans. The poll used for this information was conducted from April 20 to May 3, 2021, with a sample size of 1,842 adults. Analysis: This media source provides valuable insights into the issue of discrimination against Asian Americans, and we can examine these insights through a few important lenses. One key aspect is the perception of discrimination – when people believe that discrimination against Asian Americans is increasing, it not only affects their sense of security but also their feeling of belonging within society. Additionally, the data reveals a stark contrast in concern levels between Democrats and Republicans, emphasizing how one's political affiliation can significantly influence their perception of cultural issues. Furthermore, the concept of intersectionality is vital to consider; it suggests that within broader racial categories like "Asian" and "Black," different subgroups may experience unique forms of discrimination and challenges, highlighting the complexity and diversity of their cultural experiences. My Insights: This source underscores the critical need for awareness and action regarding discrimination against Asian Americans. It is essential for clinicians, business leaders, and company employees to be aware of these issues and their impact on individuals and communities. Summary This news story described a hispanic festival that takes place in Memphis for the month of October. As they capture in the news video, the festival is open for anyone to go to, in fact they urge more people of different cultures to attend. The festival includes bilingual musicals and plays, so that people who do not speak spanish can still understand it. The festival also includes things such as face painting, as they close the festival with "the day of the dead," a hispanic holiday. Analysis This bilingual festival represents diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging or DEI&B. The hispanic culture makes the festival bilingual so that people of other cultures may attend and be included in its festivities. As the festival is located in Memphis, which is a place of many different cultures, the Hispanic culture feels welcome enough to do a month long celebration. This festival helps educate many other about their culture through its language and activities. My Insights I learned that not only can Americans be inclusive, but...
