Abstract
Roberto G. Ortiz [University] 11/2/2023 [Name] Abstract Social cognition plays a crucial part in shaping interpersonal behavior and societal norms, influencing how individuals perceive, interpret, and react to others. This essay explores the profound impact of social cognition on everyday interactions and relationships, emphasizing its influence on empathy, communication, and the formation of biases. It emphasizes the necessity for enhanced awareness and education to mitigate prejudicial attitudes and underscores the risk of negative consequences on mental health when social cognition is impaired. Ultimately, the paper advocates for policies that support social cognitive development and inclusivity, suggesting that such measures are essential to promoting a harmonious, equitable society. Introduction According to Kurdi & Dunham (2022), social cognition are mental processes and abilities used by humans and other social animals to perceive, interpret and understand social information. It is a process that entails how humans process, store and apply about other people and social situations. What makes social cognition a social issue of interest is the fact that it plays a significant role in how different people interact with each other, form relationship as well as how they navigate the complex social world. To this effect, understanding social cognition is important as it helps promote healthy social interactions, reduce prejudice and discrimination as well as enhance communication and relationships in the society. Being a social issue of relevant, it is imperative to note that without proper understanding of social cognition, people tend to experience challenging coexistence as they take each other’s difference as a weapon to attack the other because they learn new skills or behaviors through observation and imitating others. The key aspects that make social cognition a social issue include bias and stereotyping, empathy and perspective-taking, miscommunication, influence and social media, criminal justice system, mental health stigma, diversity, and inclusion among others. Basically, social cognition becomes a social issue when it leads to biases, miscommunication, discrimination and misperception of certain individuals and groups. It is an issue that requires combined efforts in awareness, education, and policy changes to enhance inclusiveness and equitable social interactions amongst humans. While analyzing the theory of mind as a potential component of social cognition, it is open that it enhances the ability to attribute mental states like desires, beliefs and intentions to others (Tsomokos & Flouri, 2023). What does this imply? It is an indication that social cognition has the ability to affect a wide range of targets most especially those that have limited abilities to make reasonable decision like children and adolescents. These targets will tend to embrace what the social world offers them without paying so much attention on its effects in their later life and imitate and pass it from one victim to the others. For instance, in adolescent social cognition, it is what these population takes or understand of their social world thus their social interactions shapes and influences their cognitive development making some lose themselves in the long run. Children and adolescents internal states tend to become manipulated by social cognition making them victims of social incompetency. Since both children and adolescents are limited in reasoning abilities attributed to their level of amygdale growth, one can conclude that any embraced belief or trait from the social world becomes a norm for this populace making it a challenge if no right interventions become realized to remedy the assumed behaviors. Methods Other than children and adolescents whose reasoning abilities...
