Abstract
Signature Assignment Proposal 03/20/22 [Name] Development of Psychiatric Institutions Objective The purpose of this paper is to have the reader understand the creation and acceptance of psychiatric institutions. The reader will also come to understand the difficulties psychiatric insitutions experienced to remain successful in helping humans with mental disorders. In addition, the reader will learn about important historical individuals who influenced the success of these institutions. This information will then represent the importance it has and continues to make in the history and future of psychology. Historical Perspective The fate of the mentally ill once belonged to the law and judges, in order to decide the proper method to protect the rest of the public (Chrysikou, 2019). However, the psych ward in many hospitals would not properly treat those who needed further care or housing. The positions of doctors became stronger than those of judges after a certain time (Chrysikou, 2019). Through further research of mental illnesses, discovery of drugs, and experiences from institutionalized people themselves, the rise of an organized and institutional psychiatry will be presented. Personal Interest I am very interested in learning about the creation of psychiatric institutions and the variety of perspectives people had regarding mentall illnesses and how they should be treated. After learning about Nellie Bly’s experience at Blackwell’s Island, I wondered what other people in institutions experienced, and how others perceived them. If mental disorders were once thought of as ‘evil’, I would like to look deeper into how these insitutions were finally accepted for humans to receive proper care for their mental illnesses.
