Abstract
Course name Instructor’s name Assignment due date Project Approach Plan on Community Introduction Offering the STEM curriculum from a young age prepares children to solve more complex problems in their later education. The project approach is an important strategy based on evidence that children begin understanding and learning STEM concepts early in their development (Clements & Sarama, 2016). The current project on the community is for a pre-kindergarten classroom of twenty children aged between three and five years old. At this age, children begin exploring their environment and can relate classroom concepts to their real-world experiences. I will conduct the project with the full participation of the children by encouraging them to explore and investigate the topic of the community (Chard, 2016). The project will involve classroom and field activities that will provide an interesting approach to learning new skills and gaining knowledge through classroom participation. The topic covers what a community represents, where children see communities, how it benefits them, and some helpers. The community project seeks to encourage students to experience being part of their community and identify some of the benefits it offers. Learners will engage in individual and group activities where they will discover important aspects of the topic with minimal intervention. The project will include additional support for learners demonstrating greater need for the teacher’s assistance to complete critical tasks. Additionally, parents and family members are encouraged to participate in the project by providing support to their children whenever needed. Using the project approach will introduce STEM concepts that the learners will find useful in their kindergarten and primary education. Anticipatory Web The anticipatory web will provide guiding questions and demonstrate how they will contribute to the learning experiences of the students. The topic of the project is community and learners will answer questions that relate their knowledge to development and growth in various content areas. Topic: Community Questions: What is it? Where do you see them? What does it do? Who are helpers? What do you like about them? Anticipatory Web: Community Curriculum Web The curriculum web for the topic demonstrates the subject areas that will be covered in the classroom. It shows how students in the classroom will gain concepts of the topic and the impact on their knowledge of various subjects. The content areas covered under the topic include Language Arts, Math, Social-Emotional Learning, Science, Art, and Social Studies. Letter to Parents Dear Parents and Legal Guardians I am writing to inform you that the class is going to engage in a fascinating project where they will choose a topic to explore through various creative methods. The project approach allows the teacher to engage students in selecting and implementing a project for the topic of their choice. It is based on evidence that from a young age, children begin to understand and apply core STEM concepts through classroom activities. To effectively implement the project approach, the teacher has to engage students in selecting a topic of interest that will be fascinating for the learners. Exploring pre-selected questions on the topic provides the learners with the opportunity to investigate and explore their environment in meaningful classroom discussions and application of knowledge. The project will enhance problem-solving skills among the students, engage them in critical thinking, and facilitate socialization through group work and collaboration. Additionally, the project approach explores familiar topics that offer students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the real-world environment. For this project, the class agreed to explore the topic of the community after considering various avenues and other topics. A community is a fundamental concept of everyday life that students encounter in their homes, school, and in the real-world. Learning about what constitutes a community will provide students with background knowledge of its role in their lives and the impact they have on other people. The fundamental role of the learning institutions is to prepare students to become responsible adults who will contribute positively to their community. The current topic aligns with this goal since students will explore various aspects of a community and how it benefits their lives. The class will explore examples of communities, provide artistic examples describing a community, and identify some professions that act as helpers to the members of their community. Exploring the current topic will involve various classroom and field activities including the participation of parents and legal guardians to observe the project. Children will make artistic impressions of what they think a community represents and rely on your support to complete tasks related to the project. There will be field trips to the park and the fire station where students will observe communities in action. I intend to invite parents and family members to help their children in the completion of the project and encourage them to provide support during this journey. The children will have to complete tasks at home involving collecting pictures and posters with the support of their parents. It is important that they receive full cooperation including talking about the project’s topic and its significance in the real world. By learning about the community, children...
