Institutional Affiliation Genie Case Study Nature vs. Nurture The nature vs. nurture debate attempts to identify the balance in the influence of genetic factors and the environment on behavior. Through this debate, researchers determine how biological factors particularly the inherited genes and the environment influence learning abilities (Beck, 2021). Nature indicates the individual’s pre-wiring that cannot be changed and is adopted from genetic factors. Measures of intelligence, social skills, and physical characteristics are categorized as nature and mostly rely on an individual’s genes. On the other hand, environmental factors such as the family members influence, education obtained through school, and learning resources comprise nurture. While both nature and nurture play a significant role in learning and development, the debate is based on the balance indicating the input each has on a child. Genie’s case demonstrates that both nature and nurture influenced her learning and behavior. The scientists interacting with her noted that she was sociable from the start and able to attract people’s attention. Their assessment of her initial skills demonstrates that nature influenced her ability to socialize even when she had not gained any language or communication skills (Cherry & Swaim, 2021). From the start of her education, Genie was able to connect with other people and demonstrate an understanding of social interactions. According to Genie’s case, her brother and mother did not pay any attention to her and her father was abusive. Consequently, she did not learn any social skills from her home and nature influenced her ability to socialize with social workers immediately after she was discovered. The role of nurture is demonstrated by the increasing ability of Genie to draw attention to people and her environment. Cherry & Swaim (2021) shows that Genie was unable to communicate and interact with other people as children of her age did. Social neglect had denied the child the ability to adapt to her environment and her brain was affected by isolation and torture. The case of Genie demonstrates that her learning abilities were affected by lack of resources and a hospitable living environment. Initial assessments showed that she could not vocalize words and her test scores were similar to those of a 1-year old child (Garmon, 1994). Learning and behavior are facilitated by the social environment and the availability of resources such as teachers, textbooks, and peers in class. The years of isolation had denied the child the ability to gain knowledge and social skills like other children of her age. Language Development Genie’s case attracted the attention of linguist and psychologists who intended to study language development among children. Having lived in isolation, Genie was unable to speak or understand language when she was discovered. Eventually, it was observed that she was only able to speak her name and say “sorry” during interactions with other people (Cherry & Swaim, 2021). Being unable to speak made it harder for Genie to adapt to the new environment and socialize with other people. However, she compensated with excellent skills on nonverbal communication and was soon walking around the hospital and interacting with people. according to the case, Genie lacked the skills or the ability to speak with other people and had no language development when she was beginning rehabilitation. The case demonstrates the role of the environment in language development since Genie’s isolation was a challenge to her ability to communicate. Genie missed the critical stage to acquire learning and was unable to fully develop grammar skills even through rehabilitation. The critical period theory demonstrates that children reach a stage where their language skills explode and they begin to acquire new words much faster (Rymer, 1993). During the first year of learning, Genie made significant progress learning new words and gaining a better exposure to language. She was able to put two and three words together which was essential.
