Abstract
Culture bound syndrome analysis In the earlier days, culture influenced how symptoms were perceived, explained, and dictated how and where to seek help. Before rapid globalization and industrialization, culture determined the best way to address and express distress. In this reference, therefore, some ailments were culture-based and not universal like it happens in the contemporary world. As per cultures, they came up with remedies and solutions for specific syndromes, and each culture managed similar syndromes differently. With the advancement of technology and industrialization, cultures are being influenced by other cultures, and the ancient syndromes and ailments found remedies. Culture-bound syndromes were first expressed over 60 years ago with the underlying argument that certain psychiatric syndromes were confined to specific cultures. This essay aims to discuss the historical and current status of Dhat, a culture-bound syndrome dominant in the Indian subcontinent. That, also known as semen loss anxiety syndrome, was depicted by symptoms that included semen loss, leading to anxiety and general body weakness. In the 1960s, That was described as having several vague somatic complaints of weaknesses, fatigue, sexual dysfunction, appetite loss, and guilt (Bhuyan and Deka, 2019). At that time, medical analysts and specialists associated all these with semen loss following masturbation, micturition, and nocturnal emissions (Rice and Liamputtong, 2020). These symptoms were notably in the ancient Indian Ayurvedic texts from way back 5000 B.C, whereby the semen production derived from the food egested. Semen loss for men in combination with anxiety is incredibly an essential factor for men because of the attitudes to masculinity male sex roles which entails procreation and fertility. For such reasons, anxieties were treated with dietary supplements like corn flakes and crackers. The remedies were advertised in the 19th century and were sold to treat semen loss anxiety in Britain and the United States of America. Such were the treatments in the Indian subcontinent where the Dhat syndrome was dominant traditional, and faith healers offered and continue to offer food supplements, treatment strategies, and herbs (Bhuyan and Deka, 2019). Obviously, with civilization, industrialization, and globalization, such anxieties have gone down, although not completely disappeared.
