Abstract

Course name Instructor’s name Assignment due date Module 5 Discussion: It’s Only a Model Scientists test models to make sure they are accurate by using different sets of inputs and testing its performance. While models are important tools in researching and understanding scientific scenarios, it is important to ensure that they provide accurate representations of events under investigations. To test models, scientists use sets of data that are separate from the data they used to create the model and perform tests to determine if the model accurately predicts the event. They identify data that could reflect the scenario but is different from the one used during the training stage of the model and use the inputs to determine if it provides the correct output. Testing a model using data whose output is known and conducting the test several times provides a measure for the accuracy of the model. Environmental scientists rely on models to facilitate the understanding of the complex interacting systems in the field. Research topics in environmental science involve describing scenarios that are the result of numerous related variables. For instance, climate change, animal populations, and pollution are each affected by many variables that create the complex systems. Models facilitate the visualization and simulation of processes in areas where there are interacting factors. Additionally, models are essential in developing and testing hypotheses on relationships. Environmental scientists use models when conducting experiments to represent the relationships they intend to test. Models are important communication tools in the field since they demonstrate important findings that stakeholders could use to make decisions. An example of a real existing model is Hadley Centre Coupled Model version 3 (HadCM3) that models climate prediction. The model is based on mathematical equations on the interaction...
