The danger of a single story In her video, Chimamanda Adichie talks about the dangers of knowing one side of a story regarding a particular group. First, the author of the book Danger of a single story' said that one of the issues affecting one-sided stories is stereotypes. Therefore, she said that among the dangers of stereotypes is that they are so incomplete that they leave many other things hanging and many other unanswered questions. Adichie insinuated that believing a story told from a single side could be dangerous. It usually stirs unnecessary hatred that prevents people from genuinely connecting with people as an individual. Adichie meant that a single story tends to put people as a group, therefore regarding them as such. In this case, when one member of the group has negative traits, the whole group is described by the negative traits of that person who possesses that particular negative trait. Adichie cites that the single-story technique is used by people who want to create the power of feel powerful over a particular group. Therefore, in this respect, Adichie says that a single story tends to create the notion of 'us vs. them.' With this, Adichie warns that if people continue hearing single stories, there would be the risk of critical misunderstanding. The misunderstanding would be based on the lives of different people vs. their own lives. Additionally, there would be a misunderstanding of different communities' cultures and the same to happen to everyone because each is entitled to own opinion and ideas.
