Shifting Social Dynamics: Crime and Justice in Post-War America

Abstract

Social Change Discussion To what extent did changes in American society impact the social-structural view of crime beginning with the Great Depression; Presidential election of Franklin D. Roosevelt; America's entrance into WWII; the changing roles of women, and African American's in the post war era; as well as rapid changes in the culture of music and sports? While considering the Great Depression and Roosevelt’s presidency, it is open that they redefined crime. The Great Depression brought about a widespread economic hardship often correlating wit increased crime rates. During this era, people struggled for survival due to unemployment triggering poverty and unrest among citizens. Fortunately, Roosevelt introduced the New Deal programs whose aim was to alleviate poverty and unemployment. This approach had a positive impact on crime rates as it reduced chances of criminal behaviors as citizens became engaged with the new job opportunities. However, as time went by, the expansion of federal authority and social programs significantly influenced the criminal justice system approach to addressing social issues beyond mere law enforcement. This became a challenge which adversely influenced crime rates amongst citizens. With the America’s entrance into WWII, this era saw shifts in societal norms, values and priorities. Women embraced men jobs as their men left for war changing what the society initially perceived as gender roles. Basically, this period changed the focus of citizens to national unity and sacrifice leading to decreased crime rates as people diverted their attention towards the war effort. It is a war that brought changes in gender roles increasing opportunities for women in workforce. Such changes had long-term effects on social structures and crime patterns.
