Abstract
Paper Outline (Monica) Introduction Background: Child abuse and negligence is a social concern that stirs hot debates across the globe. When a child experiences some form of abuse or negligence while growing up, they tend to react towards such experiences defining negative outcomes on their overall well-being. Research question: How does child abuse impact the academic performance of primary students? Thesis: As confirmed from the four reviewed sources, child abuse leads to poor academic performance as the primary students lack peace of mind affecting their concentration. Body Main Idea #1: Relationship between child abuse/neglect and poor academic performance amongst primary students Supporting evidence: Chitiyo & Pietrantoni (2019) argues that children who experience physical, sexual, emotional, or psychological abuse are more likely to experience negative effects on their academic achievement. Supporting evidence: Abused children typically perform poorly academically, which is largely due to difficulties concentrating on their education (Dlamini & Makondo, 2017) Main Idea #2: Differing reactions on different children from child abuse Supporting evidence: Raped children tend to fear anything to do with opposite sex in their life affecting their concentration even at school (Herrenkohl, Hashmi & Lowenthal, 2021). Supporting evidence: Physically abused with beatings, lack of basic needs among others tend to generate a negative attitude towards life and those around them thus affecting their academic performance (Dlamini & Makondo, 2017) Main Idea #3: Possible recommendations or remedy to this problem Supporting evidence: It is imperative to set policies that will address the needs of psychologically, mentally and physically abused children to ensure that they enjoy their life just like any other child (Azi & Saluhu, 2016).
