Abstract

Initial Post The drive to become the best in a sport or any competition is an intrinsic value in human nature. The pressure of becoming the best in a sport is heartbreaking. Dave is an example of a demoralized soul in attempting to become the best. The first step is to assess Dave’s motivation status, mental health, weaknesses, and performance history where then a discussion can be made on goal setting, intrinsic values and motivation on his sport, and mental wellbeing. Dave needs to work on his self-regulating skills. For instance, positive self-evaluation and mindfulness during competition. Dave is doing his best to be at the top, he needs to understand that with self-belief and self-motivation, he can become a star. It is also essential to encourage Dave to train mentally for the sport. Most Skiers like Dave train physically for long hours causing burnout. Mental training can be achieved through mental rehearsal techniques which focus on mental relaxation, concentration, skill development, and decreased performance anxiety levels. Mental rehearsal also boosts self-confidence and motivation. Dave should make skiing a passion. He initially started skiing out of his desire and joy for the sport. Dave is a member of the US Skier Club and has won many races for its club in the national and regional races. He ought to appreciate the small wins and make skiing an adventure, not a competition. Finally, an evaluation needs to be done to assess the effectiveness of the stipulated programmed techniques in shifting from outcome goal orientation by assessing performance, motivation, and individual well-being (mental and physical).
