Abstract

Sapir-Whorf hypothesis The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis assumes that people who speak different languages cannot interpret the world similarly. For this reason, such people view and interpret the world differently. However, in Arrival movie, it is clear that though Aliens and humans are two different creatures whose language is nothing to compare, the power of communication brought light to the world as humans express great abilities in communicating and enhancing their relationship with these monsters. Therefore, one can conclude that the way people view the world remains coined around what unites or divides the world's habitats. Language is among the strongest factors that divide humans as it hinders healthy relationships among people attributed to differing perceptions coined around misunderstandings. If people respect each other and accept that people differ in cultures, languages and religions but have a mutual characteristic of being humans sharing the same blood color, then engaging with each other regardless of the different languages would not be a problem. Immersing in a new language enhances flexibility in humans as it allows people to view the world from a more advanced perception. Through learning new languages, one may understand other cultures and their relevance, thus enhancing respect for them throughout, thus resulting in habitable environments for different people. However, immersing in a new language does not mean that one can change or ignore their culture but rather enable people to become more flexible in embracing and sharing new worldviews previously ignored. New languages do change the way one thinks, especially if the mind is glued to fiction about the other languages, as understanding something is better than assuming it.
