Abstract
Analyzing the Power of Human Connection: A Reflective Analysis of Brené Brown’s TED Talk “The Power of Vulnerability” [Name] ABS 407 – Final Assignment [Name] June 22, 2025 Introduction For my final field-based analytical and reflective assignment, I chose to watch Brené Brown’s TED Talk titled “The Power of Vulnerability.” This program stood out to me because it dives into emotional connection and how vulnerability plays a central role in how we communicate with one another. As I took notes, I paid attention to how Brown connected with her audience and what communication strategies she used. In this paper, I will describe my observations, reflect on her communication approach, and analyze the program using communication theories such as self-disclosure, social penetration theory, and nonverbal communication cues. These concepts allowed me to see her talk not just as a personal narrative, but as an intentional and strategic communication effort. (Brown, 2010; Adler & Proctor, 2017) Program Description and Field Notes The TED Talk lasted about 20 minutes. Brené Brown stood alone on stage, speaking directly to the audience. There were no visual aids or interruptions, just her voice and her storytelling. Her tone was casual yet intelligent, and she used humor, body language, and relatable stories to connect with the audience. She opened up about her own experiences as a researcher and a person struggling with vulnerability, which made her message feel honest and real. There were no traditional advertisements, but she briefly referenced her research and books, subtly reinforcing her credibility. Throughout the talk, I noticed she maintained strong eye contact with the audience, used pauses strategically to allow the message to settle, and often smiled or laughed to maintain warmth and connection. She also walked the stage slowly, using space effectively without being overly animated. These behaviors showed confidence and ease, which encouraged the audience to trust and listen. Reflections on Communication Style and Strategies What really impressed me was how natural her communication felt. She didn’t use big words or sound overly academic. Instead, she sounded like someone having a meaningful conversation. I noticed how her body language matched her message: she used open gestures, facial expressions, and movement to emphasize certain points. She also used pauses to let the message sink in. These nonverbal cues supported her verbal message, making her talk more powerful. Her use of personal stories created a strong emotional connection. For example, when she described her initial resistance to vulnerability and how it affected her personal growth, I felt both inspired and connected to her journey. Her vulnerability became a strength in the way she presented herself, and this made her relatable and trustworthy. She framed vulnerability not as a flaw but as a way to build courage, compassion, and connection. (Adler & Proctor, 2017) Analytical Application of Human Communication Concepts One theory...
