Abstract
Positive side: Positive expectations about another person might make that individual feel more competent and self-assured. They could then display actions that are consistent with these optimistic expectations, finally living up to them. For instance, if a teacher expresses confidence in a student's ability to succeed in a topic, the student may be inspired to put in more effort and get better scores. Negative side: Unfavorable expectations may result in unfavorable results. It may become a self-fulfilling prophesy when the person starts to doubt their own ability if someone anticipates failure or ineptitude from them. This self-doubt may result in underperformance, which would support the unfavorable expectations. For instance, if a management consistently criticizes a worker's efforts, the worker can lose motivation and commit more errors. I've had a situation at work when the self-fulfilling prophesy happened. I was given the task of working on a project with a coworker named Alex many years ago. Due to Alex's prior errors, our boss had very low expectations for his performance from the start. Both privately and in team meetings, our boss repeatedly voiced concerns about Alex's ability. The continual criticism of Alex made the office unfriendly, and he started to have self-doubts about his ability. He began to worry more and more about the job, worried he would mess up and let our management down. Alex's performance suffered as a result, and he committed mistakes that confirmed our manager's low standards. The self-fulfilling prophesy in this situation had a highly negative outcome. The unfavorable standards our manager set for us negatively impacted Alex's performance and self-esteem, finally resulting in the dreaded failure.
