Scholars have provided facts showing that the body positivity movement has numerous benefits for individuals at risk of developing a negative body image as a result of the information they access from the religion, media, and culture. The body positivity movements for the celebration of diversity and the acceptance of all bodies in the media regardless of the size, shape, skin tone, and physical disabilities. The movement promotes the presentation of the realistic body types that represents all people in the media. It has its origins from the 1960s with the establishment of the National Association to Aid Fat Americans (NAAFA). NAAFA advocated for equal rights and opportunities for Americans with higher weights and promoted their acceptance in the society. It criticized the companies in the diet industry for their marketing strategies that it noted as promoting particular unrealistic body types (Yeboah, 2020). NAAFA evolved to the body positivity movement that encourages healthy relationships with individuals’ own bodies and accommodation of all types of beauty. In particular, the movement has noted the representation of women’s bodies as unrealistic and reflecting negatively on the people with higher weights. The social marginalization of the overweight individuals has led to criticism against ideas of the ideal body type. The emergence of social media and its role in marketing has led to significant concerns over the shame associated with people’s body type. Members of the movement promote the creation of the social equality among people with different body types. The shame on resulting from social media on different body types could escalate with the individuals’ use of social media (Brathwaite et al., 2022). Users of platforms and organizations marketing diet products post images and information that advocates for an ideal type of body type. Consequently, the members of the body positivity movement have used social media as a platform to oppose the creation of the ideal body type narrative. The goal of the movement is to promote a healthy acceptance of all individuals regardless of the shape, color, or size of their bodies. From the promotion of equal opportunities for over weight individuals, the movement has expanded the scope of its social appeal to include skin color and abilities in their social initiatives (Brathwaite et al., 2022). The body positivity movement is a major social institution in the United States that seeks to promote the acceptance of all body types. Its use of social and mainstream media has caused debate on its impact on health, the social acceptance of overweight people, and ending social stigma related to the topic. Determining the values at stake on the topic of the body image movement is critical in taking a position on the movement. Measures to promote the perception of weight as an issue influencing quality health outcomes has contradictory effects on the body positivity movement. Campaigns against obesity promote the use of diet and exercise to facilitate weight loss to achieve the desired quality of health.
