Abstract

ILS4176 – FINAL EXAM GENERAL GUIDELINES This exam requires you to write three short essays, each at least 250 words. Each essay should have a one to two sentence thesis. Three short body paragraphs and a one to two sentence conclusion. Do not consult outside sources for this exam. Only use the sources that have been provided in the course – and any articles you might have read and used in your discussions and journals. You are allowed to very briefly quote or paraphrase allowed sources, but do so sparingly. No more than two per short essay – and cite all sources with in-text citations and a Works Cited at the end (just one for all three essays). This is about you demonstrating your knowledge of course materials and making strong interdisciplinary connections between sports stories and the way they signify across a range of disciplines. DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS Choose any 3 of the following prompts. For each prompt, as noted above, write a short essay, minimum 250 words each. Do not repeat films or texts in your answers. Example: if you use Creed for one essay you cannot use it for another. Please number your essays according to the prompts you choose. Example: 2, 3, 5. PROMPTS (Again, choose any 3) Identify and explain three aspects of an ancient Greek Athlete’s education and role in society. Then relate this to the expectations for athletes in today’s world. How are they similar and different?

Maximizing Athletic Excellence: Lessons from Ancient Greece

Ancient Greeks developed the notion of Arete and applied it to all persons including athletes who were expected to do more than just excel at sport. Which of the athletes whose lives and careers we studied this term best lives up to these expectations? Support your argument with specific examples and sound reasoning.

Aristotle’s definition of the Epic Hero and the Tragic Hero can be applied to many of the athletes we have studied on film and in literature this term. Choose one athlete and argue for their status either as Epic or Tragic Hero based both on their representation in a specific film and what you have learned about their life from research, providing convincing examples and solid reasoning. Be sure to consider
