Employing the appropriate assessment practices ensures that teachers provide useful feedback that can improve learning experiences for students. Through performance-based assessment, teachers and families can have a clear picture on the progress of students and how they can apply skills gained in the classroom in the real world. My plan for assessing ELs is to use authentic assessments including portfolios and presentations that show how students are able to apply knowledge beyond the classroom. I intend to focus on giving positive feedback based on the results of portfolio-based assessments that show the progress learners make as opposed to focusing on particular data points (De Valenzuela et al. 2022). Observing and documenting the learners’ progress will provide valuable information that I could use to focus on productive and informative feedback for students and families. The goal of each assessment will be to demonstrate the students’ proficiency in specific areas of learning that will improve the effectiveness of classroom instruction. By using clear and evidence-based rubrics in assessments, I plan to improve the accuracy of assessments in strengthening the students’ instruction and knowledge application. Using rubrics ensures that student assessments are consistent with learning expectations and feedback to students and families. My assessment plan intends to incorporate evidence on learning experiences for ELs and the role of families in their education. I plan to use student-specific tests and incorporate observations to determine the best approaches for instruction in the classroom.
