Abstract
Cultural Competency Paper: Asian Culture Introduction Culture enhances a sense of belonging. There are a variety of cultures that give different people unique identities that differentiate them from one another. To this effect it is important to understand different cultures to ensure respect and acceptance of each other for a peaceful coexistence. While it is not a must to see the relevance of each culture, it is important to at least understand that all humans are equal and deserve equal treatment regardless of skin tone or culture. Paying close attention on the Asian culture, one can confirm that this is an incredibly rich and diverse culture that encompasses a wide range of traditions, religions, language and customs. Since Asia is not a monolithic entity, it has a variety of countries with each holding a unique culture and history though there are some common principles and elements often associated with this culture. Asian culture origin dates back thousands of years in a number of ancient civilizations like Indus Valley of South Asia, ancient Chinese dynasties among other dynasties and empires within the middle East, Southeast and beyond. Among the treasured essentials of this culture include being family-centered, collectivism, respect for tradition, art and aesthetic, spirituality and religion, hospitality and education. Education is a central aspect of this culture where academic excellence and achievement remains the key. They also exercise dietary practices with nutrition serving as its most significant aspect of this culture while maintaining mind-body practices. Meditation, relaxation and mindfulness techniques serve as daily routines that this culture uses to promote mental and emotional well-being. Asian culture has both positive and negative effects on health. Asian lifestyle comprises of unique diets, traditional healing practices, family dynamics and social norms that affect health in different ways (Hasnie, Zelikovsky & McClure, 2023). Since Asian culture is diverse, keeping up with the demands of the set lifestyle practices proves challenge making it impossible to have the same effects on health across this diverse community. However, this culture has positive effects on health like dietary habits which enhances good health since they are always rich in vegetables, wholegrain and fruits thus nutritionally relevant in enhancing positive health. Asians are able to detect health issues early enough due to their value for preventive healthcare and holistic wellness. Such an approach allows them to maintain healthy lifestyle practices like regular exercise and mindful techniques that enhances good health in a great manner.
