Abstract
For this research essay, you will be tracking a detail, motif (theme,) philosophy, symbol, or any other of the analytical tools we’ve discussed through the play Macbeth. Notice how they exist in play to make an argument about the purpose of the idea in the work of art. You will then take these details and examples from the text and relate them to any of the theories we’ve been working with in class. In other words, you will be investigating a confusing/interesting section or occurrence - a “what’s up with this?” detail - and use research on a literary theory to help you answer that question. The research aspect of your essay will be taking your argument and bringing it into the broader conversation of these theories that already exist. Don’t just use the theory articles as means of copying someone else’s argument. Don’t be afraid to build on what someone else has said or disagree with them. Try to start sentences with “but,” “although,” or “however” after analyzing a quote from one of your articles. This will help you practice writing interesting arguments where your voice outshines the voice of your sources. Remember, this is a research-“ed” essay, which means your argument comes first, the purpose of research is to support or complicate your argument. Theories we’ve discussed: Gender (feminist/ masculinist). Focus will be on Lady Macbeth gender roles. Requirements: 6-8 Pages (Not including the Works Cited page) MLA formatting (Including in-text citations and a Works Cited page) Minimum of 3 outside sources used (one of which must be peer-reviewed) Sections: (To be Discussed) 1-3 pages: review of literature. Summary of sources and different perspectives on your specific theory. Explain to the audience the theoretical approach you’re taking and define terms in the complex and interesting way you’re using...
