Rip awakens from a long sleep to find himself in a vastly different setting. When Rip initially wakes up, he shows characteristics that indicate a sense of remoteness and perplexity. Even his own family has changed, and he no longer recognizes his surroundings. This reflects the rapid social and cultural growth that occurred in America throughout its early years. Rip's confusion is a metaphor for the problems people have when adjusting to a rapidly changing reality. Furthermore, the story of "Rip Van Winkle" reflects a typical gender role divide, with women depicted in a limited and domestic domain.
