The Divisive Debate: Examining Americas Contentious Gun Control Policies

Abstract

Week Two Discussion Gun control is an issue that is heavily influenced by the historical and cultural context in which it exist amongst the American society. Based on the Gun Control Act of 1968, it is clear that all American citizens and legal residents have the right to acquire a gun upon hitting the age of 18 years. However, the cultural belief of gun ownership has led many American to enjoy the right of gun ownership even at a tender age of less than 18 years as the federal government does not require licensing of gun owners or purchasers. Such lose controls are enhanced by top government officials whose urge to benefit from such social policy remains defined. Gun control policy should therefore be more stricter to ensure that only the eligible persons access guns to avoid unnecessary tensions and violence that the lose laws of gun ownership expose the American populations. Over 80% of democrats support such changes while significant percentage of republicans supports the current loose gun controls. I believe that the point of view that shapes this policy is utilitarian approach. Based on this approach, the end/outcome justifies the means and greatest benefits expected for the greatest number. The approach is society-centered thus provide leaders with a chance to sell their agendas promising society the security that gun access or limited gun access would come along with.
