Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story Young Goodman Brown claims allegorical significance in its characters, setting, and objects. The names of the two characters that dominate the novel are metaphorical. Brown signifies a man’s hereditary predilection to evil while faith manifests Christianity and virtues attributed to the religion. Brown bids his wife goodbye and begins his journey to the woods. The forest in the old times was a symbol of evil, and Brown’s journey signifies that she is up to something dangerous and terrible. It is a journey of darkness and narrow and dull paths. “The road grew wilder and drearier, and more faintly traced, and vanished at length, leaving him in the heart of the dark wilderness, still rushing onward, with the instinct that guides mortal man to evil” (Para 51). Brown is innocent, and the darkness and narrow paths awaken Brown’s conscience to conform to evil. The woods close behind them as they walk, alluding that Brown is destined for sin and may not return to his innocent state of mind. The elder Brown, a companion they met in the forest, symbolizes the devil. Young Goodman Brown represents the fall of man. He sees hypocrisy in the Christian religion, and in his journey to the woods, he needs to know the story of the evil one. The story is similar to that of the biblical context. Eve and Brown were curious and in dire need to seek evil. Through the evil journey, Brown loses the love of his life. Guadalupe has its identity in the Christian faith. She is a symbol of holiness and purity. Denise Chavez tells a story of Guadalupe at different ages; at seventeen, thirty-two, and seventy-two as she climbs through the Togues peak.in his story. “Guadalupe is the mother of all Americans, and she is always with us (para 40).
