Abstract

Agnes Varda's Influence on French Industry Agnes Varda's Influence on French Industry Agnes Varda is known as the “Mother of the French new wave.” Varda was a Belgium –born French film director, photographer, screenwriter, and filmmaker whose work revolved around sexism. Varda deeply influenced the film industry and the world at large with unique works that focused on achieving documentary realism, social commentary, and women's issues that came along with a distinctive experimental style. Varda lived for 90 years “30th May 1928-29th March 2019" and left behind a great legacy. Among other awards, Varda received the Palme d'honneur global impact award at the Cannes festival in France along with becoming the first feted female director with an honorary Oscar. Agnes Varda is notorious for creating films that represent the French new wave. It is a method of filmmaking that changed the way people view films today and allowed for more of the artist’s expression. Paying close attention to Varda's determination to bring meaningful films during the early 1950s, one can argue that technological limitations did not hamper this artist’s urge to pass on the intended message to the target audiences. On the contrary, Varda took advantage of the limitations of sound technology during this era that limited many artists to indoor filming to express the potential of a location shooting approach to outdoor filming. Such an insight spoke loud to the film industry on the need to embrace the available resources to create impactful content for the target audiences. Though the use of non-professional actors was unconventional for the 1950s French filming, Varda employed the approach to express the need to embrace talent and pass the knowledge from one artist to the other for a better film industry in the long run. It is a concept that one can connect to learning with experience to tell the artist that it is only through exposure that artists can manage to develop their talents and make the best out of the nurtured talents to make the filming industry educative and motivating. Varda featured many film debuts but looking at one of this artist's notable narrative films “Cleo From 5 to 7”, one can note Varda’s voice on feminism. The film highlights the major influences in Varda’s life which are calling out feminist issues. This film is in the eyes of the female gaze that took place in France in the 1960s. Featuring a female singer whose urge to disclose and enlighten fellow peers on cancer as a terminal illness that should not stop the female gender from maneuvering in life creates clear insights into the strength of a woman though in dominating in areas that were previously perceived as male zones. Varda poses a clear picture of the need to embrace all genders within the filming industry contrary to the perceived inferiority stereotype that most people used to define women especially whose urge to venture into male industries became determined. Agnes Varda co-produced a documentary called Faces Places. In this documentary, Varda and the rest of the clue photographed images throughout the film to express the beauty of different combinations within filming. Varda Visited different villages in France and filmed different landscapes to tell the filming industry the need to remain adventurous and consideration of different sceneries to produce an impactful film that not only remains geared toward money making but also brings new ideas within the filming industry to eliminate monotony in production. It is within this documentary that one can argue Varda's idea as to finding new talents that take photos from different areas, photograph and pass them along building to create a beautiful...
