Abstract

Adapted Physical Education Consideration of the demands of disabled students is essential as it expresses the inclusiveness of all persons within a learning environment without discrimination. However, though physical education proves accommodative of the disabled students' demands in a learning institution, adapted physical education comes along with an added advantage as it considers the individual demands of a disabled learner. According to Kelly (2019), physical education is a generalized approach used to suit the capabilities of disabled learners; while adapted physical education is the modified version of physical education which best suits the demands of the disabled and persons without disabilities. It is an approach that eliminates the stigmatization of disabled persons and considers the demands of both the disabled and the physically fit learners by providing an appropriate approach to handling both parties with caution. It is imperative to note that, unlike physical education, which provides general instructions on physical activities, adapted physical education provides modified instructions that provide students who are unable to participate in regular physical classes with supplementary and accommodative services and aids, making them feel appreciated. It is an approach that considers special physical education, movement education, adapted physical education and motor development approaches, thus meeting the special learners’ problems, especially in their psychomotor domain. The APE approach employs referrals, assessments and placement procedures which make the most eligible persons receive the most appropriate education program based on their noted demands. Adapting the program enables the district to express its concern for the needs of its learner populace as the approach provides the learner with the physical education service that best suits and meets their unique needs.
