Abstract

[Name] Introduction Leaders within the global business context encounter almost the same leadership challenges regardless of their defined potentials to enhance change, growth and development within an organization. A successful leader serves in the capacity of a leader and manager within an organization to enhance flow of operations. Unfortunately, leadership hiccups, comes along the way changing the embraced organizational perception affecting its brand image, performance and acceptance from the target audiences demanding abrupt creativity and defined guidance for success and sustainability from such leaders. Nokia was once a dominating giant in telecommunication markets but due to its hierarchical structure and bureaucratic decisions-making processes, it became impossible for it to respond swiftly to market changes giving its competitors like Apple and Samsung a chance to dominate such markets through customer-centric approaches grounded on innovations. To this effect, this essay will analyze Nokia problematic leadership situation that led to its decline in the cell-phone market and develop a plan for increasing its performance by utilizing five exemplary leadership practices as argued by Kouzes and Posner. While focusing on Nokia Company it is open that challenging leadership situation can have adverse effects on an organization regardless of its long well-established brand position within the markets. Nokia once dominated in the cell phone industry. It had the best brand-name that every human across the globe wished to associate with whether through an expensive or just a cheap gadget. However, by 2014, lack of creative leadership hindered Nokia potentials to maintain its topmost position as its leaders concentrated on quantity cell phone production than quality and innovative designs while addressing the needs of its target audiences (Sofiah & Aslami, 2022). However, such productions did not address the needs of the changing market preferences. On the contrary, they expressed the self-absorbed nature of Nokia company leadership/management making its targets shift their interest to Nokias competitors like Apple and Samsung that produced high-tech gadgets that matched their expectations. Nokia leadership failed to recognize and respond accordingly to the changing market dynamics between 2010 and 2015. On the contrary, this company’s leadership took advantage of Nokia’s brand image and decided to manipulate it by flocking the markets with old designed phones that proved outdated. Unfortunately, even with a renowned reputation on expertise in hardware and strong focus on developing feature phones with long battery life, Nokia leadership failed to see the essence of abandoning its old designs and embrace Smartphone’s whose touch screen features proved a potential market changer. Nokia was very slow to adapt to the popularity of Smartphone’s and their robust app ecosystems which its target audiences expected from this great organization. Unfortunately, due to internal leadership challenges and organizational culture Nokia lacked the agility in understanding and capitalizing on the changing market dynamics leading to its cell phone market decline by 2014 (Lamberg et al., 2021). It is imperative to note that during this era (2000-2014) Nokia embraced hierarchical structure and bureaucratic decision-making approaches that limited this company’s ability to respond swiftly to market changes. Such leadership problems resulted in hindered innovative approaches delaying product releases to the market negatively affecting the long embraced customer loyalty and trust. By 2014, Nokia market share reported a significant downward trend leading this great organization to selling its mobile phone business to Microsoft. Unfortunately, Nokia’s failure to swiftly adapt and remain innovative on its mobile products caused it a substantial loss of market value diminishing its brand reputation in a great manner thus the need for resilience when leaders face challenging situation to avoid such negative consequences.
