[Name] [Instructor Name] English 1301 14/10/2025 The Art of Listening Listening is a skill that many people have lost over time as a result of distractions that make it harder to interpret information. While some people are good listeners, most lack the patience and attention to gain knowledge from the information they receive. Listening requires attention when others talk to ensure one interprets information and connects with the feelings and emotions of the speaker. However, modern technologies have created distractions that are making it harder for most people to pay full attention to what is happening in their surroundings. Technology accompanies people everywhere they go and comes in different forms such as television, mobile phones, and computers at work. Dividing attention between what another person is saying and checking messages or updates on social media has made most people bad listeners. At home, family members divide their attention between listening to each other and following a program or a news update on their television, computer, or mobile phone. Technology has created distractions that has made most people poor listeners who pay little attention when others talk. As a skill, listening requires practice to maintain and improve if one intends to gain the capacity to interpret information. We are losing the art of listening since we lack adequate opportunities to practice and develop a skill that is fundamental to human nature. I admit that I am not always a good listener since I sometimes fall victim to distractions that limit my ability to learn from other people when they talk. The modern lifestyle is a major barrier to listening since people are always multi-tasking and rushing to complete tasks at a personal and professional level.
