Abstract
Financial Analysis for Target Corp (TGT) [Name] BUS627: Financial Statement Analysis (FTH2412B) [Instructor Name] April 29, 2024 Financial Analysis for Target Corp (TGT) Financial analysis offers detailed information on the performance of corporations and how they have changed over time. The current analysis for Target Corp compares its financial statements for the quarters ending April 29, 2023 and July 29, 2023. The comparative and common-size balance sheets and income statements facilitate horizontal and vertical analysis of the company’s performance. Target performed worse in terms of revenues and net profits in the three months ending July 29, 2023 (Saha et al., 2022). The company’s liquidity ratios show that its current liabilities exceed assets and this could be explained by the nature of the industry. While its solvency ratios were much better than liquidity ratios, the financial position of the company warrants consideration for changes in business strategies. The goal of the current paper is to conduct a financial analysis for Target to facilitate horizontal and vertical analysis of key features in the balance sheet and income statement for the most recent quarters. Comparative financial statements facilitate the horizontal analysis of key information from balance sheets and income statements. The current analysis for target compares the performance of the organization for the two quarters ended April 29, 2023 and July 29, 2023 that can inform the company’s financial wellbeing during the period. Two of the items in the company’s balance sheet that are of interest are the value of total current assets and the total current liabilities (Saha et al., 2022). The value of the total current assets for the organization increased during the period from $15,773 million to $16,098 million. Moreover, the value of the current liabilities increased for the period from $17,867 million to $19,332 million. The changes indicate that the increase in the value of current liabilities was much greater than the increase in the total current assets. Target needs to reconsider its changes in liquidity to ensure that the organization can meet its obligations to its lenders. A horizontal comparison of the income statement from Table 2 in the appendix shows that the organization’s total revenue decreased between April and July 2023. Consequently, the company experienced a decline in the amount of net earnings from $950 million to $835 million. The significant decrease in net earnings has significant implications on the capacity of the organization to meet its obligations to investors and stakeholders (Rahdari et al., 2020). From the horizontal analysis, Target Corp experienced a worse quarter ending July 29, 2023 than the previous financial period. A decline in revenue and a sharp rise in the company’s total current liabilities indicates the need for the organization to reconsider its financial practices and market strategies. A vertical analysis of the organization relies on the use of common-size balance sheet and income statements. For the balance sheet, a vertical comparison identifies each item as a percentage of the company’s total assets. The organization experienced only a slight increase in the total current assets as a percentage of the total assets between the two quarters. However, the total current liabilities increased considerably from 34.26% to 36.33% between the two three-month periods (Rahdari et al., 2020). The company needs to consider the implications of its borrowing strategies on the potential to repay its debts to stakeholders. For the periods ending April and July 2023, a vertical comparison of the organization’s income statements showed that the cost of sales decreased from 72.61% to 71.84%. Despite the advantage of lower costs of sales, Target retained a smaller proportion of sales as net earnings from 3.75% to 3.37%. Profitability is a major goal for decision-making in organizations and Target should consider managing their costs of operations to improve revenues (Piotroski, 2020). The company was spending more of its sales in the second quarter under consideration showing a declining performance during the period. Liquidity ratios play a major role in indicating the capacity of an organization to repay its short-term obligations. The current ratio, quick ratio, and cash ratio use items of the company’s balance sheet to determine how the organization is capable of repaying short-term debts. Lenders may refer to these ratios to determine if an organization has sufficient balances in the current assets to pay its lenders. The three liquidity ratios and calculations for the two quarters are indicated below. Current ratio=current assets/current liabilities Current ratio July 29, 2023 = 16,098/19,332= 0.8327 Current ratio April 29, 2023=15,773/17,867= 0.8828 Quick ratio=Cash and cash equivalents + accounts receivable/current liabilities Quick ratio July 29, 2023 = 3,414/19,332= 0.1766 Quick ratio April 29, 2023 = 3,157/17,867= 0.1767 Cash ratio=cash and cash equivalents/ current liabilities Cash ratio July 29, 2023=1,617/19,332= 0.0836 Cash ratio July 29, 2023= 1,321/17,867 = 0.0739 The liquidity ratios indicate a worsening trend and the company’s inability to meet financial obligations on the short-term. The value of the current...
