Abstract
[Name] When submaximal exercise is used to determine an individual's maximum oxygen consumption in the laboratory, and the field, the two sets of results may be considered equal validity (VO2max). The term "submaximal exercise" describes any physical activity conducted at a lower intensity than the participant's maximum possible output. The purpose of submaximal testing is to determine an individual's VO2max by measuring their physiological reaction to exercise at a submaximal level and extrapolating what their VO2max would be if they kept exercising at greater intensities. Heart rate and other physiological measurements approximate VO2max in both submaximal laboratory and field testing. The Astrand-Rhyming Cycle Ergometer Test is an example of a submaximal test in which the participant maintains a constant cadence on a stationary bicycle for a predetermined period while their heart rate is monitored. The 1.5-mile run test is another example of a test that measures cardiovascular fitness by having the participant run a certain distance in a given period. This type of submaximal testing can provide important details about a person's aerobic capacity and general health. In contrast, exhaustive laboratory testing requires participants to exert themselves to their limits. Standardized equipment is used in a controlled laboratory environment to determine an individual's VO2max. In other cases, such as with patients who already have preexisting problems, it may not be safe or practical to do exhaustive laboratory testing (Miller et al., 2020). However, the most stringent laboratory testing protocol may not be applicable or repeatable in other contexts or populations, such as field testing with large groups or clinical settings with patients. As submaximal testing poses less risk and is more convenient than maximum testing, it is generally used in the laboratory setting. Submaximal testing can provide important information about an individual's aerobic capacity...
