Week 9: Mass shooting due to gun rights/ownership Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting As much as gun ownership is a right under the American Constitution, to some extent, such rights cause more harm than good especially if the legally acquired firearms lands into undisciplined characters. One notable mass shooting that underscores the complexities surrounding gun ownership in America is the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in [City, State]. On December 14, 2012, a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children aged six and seven, using semi-automatic weapons he had obtained legally. It served and remains as among the deadliest school shooting in the History of United States. The shooting occurred in a small, suburban community in [City, State]. This tragedy took place in a setting that was widely considered safe and nurturing, making it particularly shocking to the nation. At the time of the attack, the school had approximately 600 students and was considered a well-regarded institution within the community. The shooter, Adam Lanza, was 20 years old and had a history of mental health issues, which raised questions about the intersection of mental health and gun ownership Adam Lanza was known to have severe social anxieties and was reportedly withdrawn (Langman, 2015). Basically, his mother was his only companion making Lanza learn and adopt his motherβs use of the legally acquired gun that she always held at her house. Prior to the shooting, he had killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, to gain access to her firearms. He used an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle during the attack, as well as two handguns. Lanza took his own life shortly after the shooting, leaving many unanswered questions about his motivations and background (Langman, 2015).
