Reviving a Struggling College Sports Program Through Objective Control

Abstract

Control methods Control is a concept that managers employ to regulate and establish standards that enhance realizing the set organization's goals. Paying close attention to the collegiate athletic program case scenario, the new coach must control the falling program by considering the necessary actions to restore standards to achieve the program's set goals. Based on the program's state, the new coach should consider objective controls rather than bureaucratic controls. Unlike bureaucratic control that focuses on whether the set rules and policies are followed, objective controls will allow the new coach to observe and measure the athletes’ behaviors and output without showing any dictatorship signs. As an objective outcome-oriented leader, the coach will observe and understand why the team members are behaving in a specific manner, thus enhancing the proper control towards achieving the most desirable behaviors. Since objective control allows the manager to regulate the behavior and output of the team members, the coach and the team will be able to analyze each other, which will enhance their performance in the long run. The coach is mandated to reward or punish members for expressing desiring or un-desiring behavior in this control. In such a case, the punished members will see the need for change while the rewarded employees will improve their behaviors and serve as role models to the misbehaving members. On the other hand, output control allows the measurement of members' results and their managers' efforts instead of their behaviors. Employing such control will allow the new coach to understand the athlete's potentials towards achieving the program's set objectives and his/her potentials in delivering to the set standards.
