Empowering Communities Through Restorative Justice: Addressing Victim Needs

Restorative justice is the repair of harm caused by criminal behavior. According to (Joyce et al. 43), the role of restorative justice is to bring together the affected parties of the criminal act- offender, victim, and community in a non-adversarial process to encourage offender accountability and meet the needs of the victim. The community has a responsibility for the welfare and supporting the needs of victims of crime. What difference does it make for the community if crime victims who do not know who harmed them have an opportunity to engage in the restorative process? The community experiences peace and tranquility. The restorative process promotes repair, reconciliation, and reassurance. Victims are given a chance to speak up their minds and demand what needs they have. The restorative process empowers a community to solve its conflicts. Meaningful relationships are established, and the damaged individuals are repaired, creating unity and harmony. What kind of message is sent to the community if the victims' needs are ignored? A community that does not fulfill the needs of its victims is a risk of recurrent criminal behavior and ineffectiveness of its people. The victims are likely to engage in substance abuse, suffer depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and loss of employment. What is the message if the victims’ needs are addressed? Victims have a right to an adequate response to their needs. Addressing the needs of victims depicts a just and fair society. The victims in the community feel empowered, and there is a reduction in repeated offenses. Community safety is improved, and a strong community is built.
