Abstract

CJ370 Response to Narrative Should legislators conduct analyses of prison population impacts and taxpayer costs? Yes. Based on the narrative, I believe that the legislators should conduct thorough analyses before implementing new laws or changes in punishment. This is because some of the punishment approaches are doing more harm than good as not primarily directed to rehabilitation. Tough punishment is not the key to limiting recidivism. On the contrary, proper human rehabilitative approaches can significantly help in lowering the rates of prison admission. Basically, understanding the potential impact on prison populations is crucial to avoid further overcrowding and ensure that the criminal justice system functions effectively. Basically, any policy that does not help lower prisoner intake should be done away with and implement those that are working towards eliminating overcrowding either through limited admissions, short sentences as well as those that embrace alternative sentencing like probation, public services among others. Additionally, estimating the costs to taxpayers can help ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and that the public is aware of the financial implications of these laws. Since the public serves as the main funders of prison management through their tax, accountability for their funds is essential to help them understand what is expected of them and how it ought to be used. Do tough laws deter future offenders? I do not think so. Basically, in most cases, the severity of punishment has no real deterrent effect or what one may call positive effect in reducing recidivism. On the contrary, such harsh laws or punishments tend to harden the criminals making them unfit to societal lifestyle after their release which triggers their chances of going back to the same prisons. In this regard, one can argue that the effectiveness of tough laws in deterring future offenders is debated among experts....
