Racial Profiling and Police Brutality: Addressing Social Injustice

Abstract

Topic 2 It is heart-breaking that this video is from a few years ago but is still extremely relevant today. Racial profiling and social injustice is a common theme in America as the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement continues to fight against law enforcement's acts of racial discrimination. The main problem that this video addresses is why people of color (POC) are being murdered by law enforcement. Of course, there are the other issues they address such as why cops are pulling over people of color without a viable reason. Something I found interesting from this video was that they stated that they were in a predominantly white community, Cincinnati, but that more POC die from police brutality there than white people. This would have to be targeted, as statistics wouldn't line up if cops treated everyone equally in the same community. Another interesting thing I found was that white people are running from and fighting law enforcement, but they do not end up being killed by law enforcement which is a different story for POC. The video shows some people, mostly cops, in support of racial profiling because it helps them to clearly pick out a person who has a warrant on them even though they say that they don't see it as a negative thing, but I believe it still does not make the case. There are other factors that can be used to seek or create a profile of a delinquent, such as lack of education or past criminal acts (Turner et al., 2020). Even though this is something that can not be clearly seen, I don't believe skin color should be a consideration as it promotes racial profiling and discrimination.
