Abstract

Week 10 CJ381 Agree Completely: The Importance of Legitimate Power I completely agree with the assertion that legitimate power is a fundamental aspect of a guard's authority in prisons. Legitimate power refers to the formal authority granted to guards by virtue of their position (Hepburn, 1985). Guards are expected to command obedience simply because they hold the role of authority. To this effect, the role of a guard inherently comes with a set of expectations and responsibilities that grant them the formal right to command obedience from prisoners. However, the effectiveness of this power is contingent on prisoners recognizing the guards' authority as valid, which highlights the delicate balance between institutional structure and social perception. Disagree: The Sole Reliance on Coercive Power I disagree with the idea that coercive power is the most effective means for guards to maintain control over prisoners. While defining coercive power, it is imperative to note that this type of authority relies on the ability to impose penalties or sanctions which in most cases causes more harm than good. Basically, with this power, guards can exert control through the threat of punishment, which to some extent can be effective in ensuring compliance among prisoners (Hepburn, 1985). Nonetheless, the reliance on coercion can foster resentment and resistance among inmates, potentially undermining long-term authority. In short, while the threat of punishment may elicit compliance in the short term, it often fosters resentment and can lead to increased tension between guards and inmates. For this reason, there is the need for a more balanced approach that includes elements of reward power and relationship-building as such an approach may be far more effective in creating a cooperative environment and improving overall prison dynamics.
