Abstract

Week 11 Pivotal Document: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Report on the Threat Assessment of School Shooters Following this week’s readings on insights from averted mass shootings, the mass shooting of choice was the planned attack at Marjory Stoneman Doughlas High School in 2018. The planned shooting did not happen as the perpetrators plan was discovered and the school leaders and law authorities intervened on time. Such a plan is well reflected on the video “I Was Almost A School Shooter” where Aaron Stark narrates on how he planned for such a shooting due to the bullying he was experiencing both at school and at home (01-40-59). By 16 years he was living in the streets as the parents had already kicked him out which made him more aggressive and the urge to revenge lead him to plan shootings by first accessing a gun although they never happened which calls for proper treatment of children both at home and school as well as implementation of mental health programs to address such conditions. Understanding the provisions of this document can help the school administrators and the society at large understand the early signs of a shooter which can be of help in controlling or stopping development of such behaviors. It is a document that was released in response to the rising incidence of school shootings aiming to identify patterns and characteristics of school shooters to inform prevention strategies. To this effect, one can argue that the primary goal is to enhance understanding of the factors leading to school shootings, ultimately guiding law enforcement, educators, and policymakers...
