Abstract
Chokeholds in America Fact Sheet Chokehold is a controversial issue that renders many people unconscious in the hand of police officers and death in severe cases. Chokeholds have claimed many lives, with Minneapolis leading with 234 chokeholds and 44 deaths between 2015 and 2022 (Siegel, Lehren and Blankstein, 2020). However, 62% of the 65 American largest police departments have banned chokeholds since the death of George Floyd in May 2020. Changes prompted by Floyds killing at police departments about neck restraints. Recent changes in America's largest police departments Though chokeholds have been a severe issue within America, two potential solutions can best address the current state of the situation: 1, Strict prohibition/ban of chokeholds and 2, Improved police training on racial bias topic. Many states like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, just to mention a few, have held the chokehold ban for over a decade. Unfortunately, loose and light restrictions have remained in force, allowing police officers to express their negligence on the issue. New York, for instance, has chokehold bans that plainly state "no use of chokeholds" such a simple restriction with no warnings upon violation cannot restrict a police officer from misusing their powers. The need to make stricter ban laws is the key to stopping chokeholds and misuse of power that leads to police brutality and violence. Training will enable many police officers to change their attitude towards civilians that differ from their culture, race, color or gender. An implicit racial bias training will enlighten police officers on the best ways to handle civilians and the need to respect life as a fundamental human right. Reference Siegel, R. Emily, Lehren W.
