A performance management system is an organized process that aims to improve individual and organizational performance by creating clear goals, providing feedback, and continuously evaluating employee performance. Its major goal is to integrate employees' activities with the company's strategic goals, promote accountability, boost productivity, and establish a culture of continuous improvement. Regular communication between managers and employees supports goal-setting, coaching, and professional development, ensuring that employees meet expectations and contribute successfully to the success of the organization. A performance management system has various advantages. It ensures that individual ambitions are aligned with the company's objectives, instilling in employees a sense of purpose and direction. Regular feedback and recognition increase motivation, engagement, and job happiness, which leads to improved performance. The technology also detects skill gaps and training requirements, assisting employees in their professional development. Early identification of performance concerns and implementation of improvement plans is made possible through timely evaluation and feedback. Furthermore, it increases responsibility by establishing explicit expectations and tracking progress. However, there are difficulties in developing and sustaining such a system. Subjectivity in performance evaluation can lead to biases and inaccurate judgements. The process will take time and resources, and some employees and managers may be resistant to change. Excessive paperwork and administrative burden may detract from the intended purpose of the system. Furthermore, an overemphasis on measurements may overlook qualitative components of employee contributions. In a real-world example encountered, a strong performance management system was in place at a software development company where a culture of continuous development was fostered by regular goal-setting and evaluations that made it easier to provide continual feedback.
