Abstract
HIV Can Persist for Years in Myeloid Cells of People on Antiretroviral Therapy The article offer insights on white blood cell subtype as a HIV reservoir suggesting new targets for cure efforts. Based on the article, myeloid cells can harbour HIV in victims previously virally suppressed for years on antiretroviral therapy. Although antiretroviral medications proves effective in treating HIV by preventing such virus from multiplying and infecting new cells, HIV may still exists in latent or resting state like the Myeloid white blood cells creating a reservoir. The article recommends consideration of these cells as a major target that enhances development of HIV virus to enhance its eradication. The article is fair as it tries to offer clear insights on a long ignored perception in controlling HIV virus from the monocytes print of view. While challenging the prevailing narratives that monocytes are too short-lived to demand consideration while fighting HIV virus, the article confirms that though short-lived, HIV persists in monocytes over several years in people virally suppressed. The fact that the researchers could detect HIV in monocytes over a long period of time is a clear indication of great triggers that keeps myeloid reservoir going hampering HIV eradication from the body. The researchers argues for the need to understand how monocytes contribute to the tissue macrophage reservoir because if monocytes express potentials in carrying virus to brain, lungs among other parts of the body, they can infect resident macrophages that proves self-renewing and live indefinitely then they prove to be a serious problem. The article has impactful information that offer a different perspective of analysing HIV eradication approaches. While it is open that antiretroviral medication are effective remedies for treating and controlling HIV virus, the need to consider the effects of short-lived monocytes in derailing...
