Abstract
Institutional Affiliation: Metronidazole in Treating Trichomonas Trichomonas vaginalis is the most common non-viral infection affecting women globally and may be associated with symptoms that vary among patients. While it can be spread to and by men, the disease mostly presents symptoms among women, usually affecting older ones more than younger women (Kissinger et al., 2018). Risk factors include having many sex partners and the presence of other sexually transmitted illnesses. Metronidazole is used to treat the bacterial infection either through one large dose or smaller doses offered over a period of one week. Treatment can be offered to pregnant women especially since the disease can affect the birth weight of a child and the overall health after birth. Following the treatment of Trichomonas vaginalis, patients are encouraged to be retested since some patients test positive within thirty days after the treatment (Kissinger et al., 2018). Avoiding risk factors lowers the chances of people testing positive after the end of the treatment. Metronidazole is the most effective treatment for the bacterial disease and it is provided through a one day 2g dose or smaller 400mg doses offered over a one week period. The mechanism of action for metronidazole relies on a reduction process that affects its behavior in the cells of bacterial and in human cells. Partial reduction of the compound allows it to inhibit the growth of bacteria and protozoans by disrupting their DNA. The bacteria causing trichomonas are inhibited by the drug regardless of the dosage provided by the care provider. Since the partial reduction only takes place in the anaerobic microbial cells, the drug does not disrupt the normal operations in the human cells (Kissinger et al., 2018). When the drug fist enters the call of the microbial organism, it creates a...
