Preparing for the Unpredictable: A Mega Tsunami Disaster Response Plan

Course name Instructor’s name Assignment due date Module 10 Discussion: Final Project Progress Final Project Topic My topic for the final project for this course is mega tsunamis and I plan to present a neighborhood disaster response and preparedness plan for the event. Mega tsunamis are rare but could be expected to occur at any time within the next 500 years. The events have the potential to cause significant destructions in coastal communities and have long-term social and economic implications. For the current topic, I plan to investigate how mega tsunamis occur and determine the capacity of modern emergency response system to meet the needs of people in affected areas. I will provide a detailed plan showing how communities, government agencies, and private institutions can prepare for the event. Reason for the Topic I am still satisfied with my topic selection since I have found evidence from research showing the potential implications it could have on coastal communities. A mega tsunami could reach hundreds of meters in height and travel up to 12 miles inland causing significant destruction of property and infrastructure (QuakeAlerts, 2025). While no mega tsunamis have occurred in the oceans of mainland United States in modern history, I still find that is it worth investigating how the event could affect people’s lives. Rare events that occur once in thousands of years could have devastating implications since communities may be uninformed and unprepared. Alternative Approach The project is still worthwhile since it is an opportunity for me to apply lessons and concept from the course in preparing a preparedness plan for an event.
