Abstract
Generally speaking, a liberal arts college is a university that places a strong focus on undergraduate education in the humanities and social sciences. In contrast to schools that focus on professional, vocational, or technical training, liberal arts colleges strive to broaden students' horizons by providing a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences. While students at a liberal arts college often focus on one area of study for their degree, they are still exposed to a diverse range of disciplines, from the hard sciences to the more traditional humanities. The liberal arts college, which has its roots in European higher education, is now closely linked with the United States, and most liberal arts colleges around the world deliberately model themselves after American institutions. One American authority defines liberal arts colleges as institutions that "focus undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the liberal arts fields of study," despite the fact that no such formal definition exists.
