Active listening in business Introduction Active listening is a soft skill that is usually developed by practice whereby the listener is required to actively engage in listening and focus on reflection and perfect the art of summarising what has been said. At the same time, active listening requires the listener to ask questions timely and also have the ability to display verbal and non-verbal messages without being judgemental or irrational. In any business setup, active listening is vital since it is the foundation of successful communication. The business owner must be in a position to try to understand fellow workers and junior and senior staff, and the understanding should be mutual. On the other hand, it is also crucial for the business personnel to understand the customers since not all customers might be acquainted with active listening. This presentation discusses the importance of active communication in business, outlining signs of active listening and how active listening could be improved in the business field to maximize business opportunities. Types of active listening Active listening demands the listener to hear, evaluate and finally interpret speech contents most desirably without being too judgemental. Four types of active listening could be applied in the business entity to improve the business entity. The four include paraphrasing, reflecting feelings, reflecting meaning, and summative reflection. Paraphrasing is the ability of the listener to reframe or decode the message without cramming or repeating word by word and understanding the contents of the communicator in their simple understanding. Paraphrasing means that the listener concentrates on the message and gets the desired point clearly. On the other hand, the reflective feeling is based on the emotional response given by the listener. The reflective feeling establishes an emotional rapport between the communicator and the listener. Reflective meaning, like the reflective feeling, is also depicted through emotions, but it involves concentrating on the facts of the message the communicator tries to convey. The reflective meaning puts the listener at a point of understanding, which puts the speaker at ease and appreciates that the message being communicated is well decoded. Finally, the summative reflection is the actual confirmation of the message's content. The summative reflection is the total combination of all three mentioned above in a recap. Unfortunately, the summative reflection is the hardest since it incorporates a personal viewpoint of the listener. Luckily, accurate summative reflection promotes efficiency in the communication process, strengthening interpersonal ties that are good for business. Importance of active listening In any business, and for a company to be successful, active listening must be at the forefront. It is usually critical to engage in active listening to make customers feel that they have been heard, understood, and served correctly. As a business person, empathy is key to the customers because the more empathy you show to the customers, the more you would be in a position to listen to them, which further translates to a good relationship. In any business setup, the customer wants to be heard to, understood, and served as per their expectations. In the real sense, research has revealed that approximately 50 % of customers believe that business entities act sympathetically when delivering customer service.
