Abstract

Roberto G. Ortiz [Instructor Name] English 1302-160 5 September 2022 Effects of Music Correlated with Performance in The Gym Physical exercises prove essential in enhancing good health. The Gym is among the major areas where people do their physical exercises using weights, machines, and other equipment that improves body fitness. However, as much as gym sessions stimulate various brain chemicals that leave the exerciser more relaxed, happier, and less anxious, the session may prove tiresome sometimes. Music is a potential aid in combating boredom and therefore it is essential in the gym. However, different genres impact the exercisers differently therefore, an understanding of what music works best on an individual’s gym workout performance is necessary. This experiment examined the correlation between music and gym workout performances. The study analyzed the effect of rock, pop, and rap music genres on gym workout performances. The study hypothesized that different music genres have different effects on the overall gym workout. After 5 days of working out with a consistent recording of the performance effect, the study concluded that the rap genre improves relaxation and motivates the exerciser to engage in more workouts. The study also viewed various publication reviews from other scholars on the subject to confirm or refute the current study’s hypothesis. Lovers of physical exercises, especially the ones that take exercise via the gym understand that gym workouts are addictive. Although one can exercise at any time of their choosing, many people find that the cooler morning or evening hours are the greatest for their gym routines. However, it is critical to note that any form of physical exercise, is very tiring and demands a lot of strength sometimes. Therefore, this would be boring sometimes and exhausting. For this reason, music becomes an important part during workout sessions as it helps distract the challenging stresses of the workout with a motivating melody of the music. Music by nature serves as a great distraction to many. During a gym workout, the exerciser heavily concentrates on the challenging elements of the workout, but when the music takes over, it increases their stamina through the generation of a good mood which improves the quality of the workout. However, it is crucial to analyze the qualities of a genre to understand which music best suits gym workouts based on an individual’s taste. According to Thakare, music triggers a range of feelings in humans like it regulates mood, captures attention, induces states of higher functioning and it encourages rhythmic movements which defines its relevance in a gym session (2-3). Based on their study on the effect of music tempo on exercise performance among 25 male and 25 female young adults, these authors noted that exercise duration of the entire group with music was significantly greater than exercise duration without music. Essentially, their study concluded that music improves workout duration for both sexes therefore the need for its inclusion during gym workouts which confirms the current study hypothesis. Though Thakare et al. study did not specify the type of music that the participants listened to during their workout; it is conclusive that they reported a positive effect on their workout durations attributed to the positive mood that the music gave the exercisers (2-5). Music enhances concentration which is fundamental in any physical exercise. In gym workout concentration not only improves understanding of the needs of the workout but also improves overall performance attributed to the accuracy of the exercise and its benefit on the body. Incorporating music in a gym workout unconsciously allows the exerciser to pay attention to the exercise while the music takes away the exerciser's negative vibes towards the workout based on its demands that might be challenging. According to Ballmann, listening to music during exercise positively impacts psychological and psycho-physiological changes within a body which enhances positive responses during an exercise challenge (2). Interestingly, these authors confirm that regardless of whether one enjoys or does not enjoy the type of music the exerciser listens to during a workout, the effect remains positive on workout duration and activeness in the long run. In their study on the effects of music on exercise and sports, Terry et al. argues that music exerts positive effects on physical activity ranging from psychological, physiological, and psycho-physical responses which then greatly improves workout performances (2-4). These authors confirm that even though music has no significant benefit on heart rate which is of consideration during any form of exercise, it does improve the exerciser's mood which allows many to...
