Reforming Criminals: The Inspiring Challenge for Criminal Justice Professionals

Abstract

Module 3 Reflection Journal: Working with Criminals How Do You Feel About Working with Criminals I believe working with criminal and helping them reform is the most inspiring thing one can remain proud of while working as a criminal justice professional. Unlike other professions that professionals relate with normal humans whose records are clean by default or by corruption, criminal justice profession exposes professionals into an environment that demands patience, integrity and professionalism to enhance success in achieving the best outcomes. As much as we have covered so many theories that tries to analyse and relate characteristics of the suspect and environment to establish the origin and triggers of a characters criminal being, I believe social learning theory took the best part of my attention inspiring my urge to learn more about what shapes a criminal character as well as working towards reforming such characters. Social learning theory explains the foundation of a criminal being from social learning perspective implying that it can analyse the victims’ childhood exposures and relate them to explain what shaped the criminal character within a person which can offer a clear pathway to reformation if the criminal justice professional is kin on such analysis (Akers, Ronald and Gary, 38). I feel contented to be a role model to these criminals by offering the best to ensure a decrease on incarceration rates and criminal rate through an increase in reformed characters using human approaches. How Researching and Working with Violent Criminals Negatively Affects the Criminal Justice Professional? Researching involves digging deeper into understanding an issue, person or situation. However when a professional engages in unethical research, the results/findings becomes compromised as the data is unclear providing no benefits especially in solving the burning problem. In such a situation, the research causes more harm than good as the results do not deliver to the intended course.
