Abstract

Reflective journal Mastering communication skills takes a milestone. However, stroke can erase the ability to communicate. A stroke occurs when there is a change in blood flow in the central nervous system due to a blood vessel's damage. Left-hand side paralysis causes speech and language problems. Recovery from stroke is not instant; it requires dedication and hard work. Family members are the most immediate people to take responsibility when their loved one faces a stroke. Therapeutic and non-therapeutic approaches are evident in the long road of recovery of a stroke patient—physical therapy such as sitting down, walking, standing, and lying down. Communication is an essential recovery for a stroke patient. Communication with a stroke patient involves face to face communication with no distractions and in a quiet place. Communication can include the use of pictures, writing, and gestures. Stroke patients should be spoken to slowly and in simple language. Communication with a stroke patient improves listening skills, sharpens the mind, and teaches one to talk with empathy and sincerity. Good communication skills enhance patient health and satisfaction. According to (Petrucka 2020), effective communication in nurse-patient interaction is argued to have therapeutic healthcare functions. It also creates a good relationship between a nurse or physician with their clients. They can express themselves freely without fear, hence improving general health. The health practitioners generally learn how to handle patients and communicate with them effectively. Face to face communication style builds trust with the patient and can speak without fear, and nurses can make a correct diagnosis. Good communication technique improves patient-nurse relationship to provide exceptional health outcomes (Papathanassiou 2014). Dealing with patients with healthy enhances the state of mind and communication in the health profession. References Kourkouta, L., & Papathanassiou, I. V. (2014).
