Abstract
This is not a perfect paper. It is just an example. [Name] A claim that I came across as I was surfing the web was that made by UberFacts, which states “Chocolate cake for breakfast helps you lose weight.” It backs its own claim up by saying that “morning is the best time to consume sweets because that`s when [our] metabolism is most active” (UberFacts, 2012). I have found four sources that support this claim and one source that refutes it. First, according to (Barns, 2015), eating chocolate speeds up the process of losing weight, lowers cholesterol, and aids sleep. To support this claim (Barns, 2015) uses a study done by German researchers that looks at the effects that chocolate has on a person’s diet. This study used three different groups of people ranging from ages “19-67” (Barns, 29015). The first group was on a low-carb diet, the second group was on a low-carb diet, but also consumed “42 grams of dark chocolate per day”, and the third group was the control group that followed their everyday diets (Barns, 2015). The results of this study showed that compared to the other two groups, the low-carb group which also consumed chocolate, “lost 10% more weight” than the other two groups (Barns, 2015). In addition, this group kept the weight off after three weeks, reported lower blood cholesterol levels, and reported being able to sleep better. Moreover, (Cicetti, 2012), does not state anything about chocolate aiding with weight loss, but does state that eating chocolate has its health benefits. To test his claim (Cicetti, 2012) looked at a couple different studies. The first study was a Harvard study which observed “the chocolate-eating habits of 31,823 Swedish women, ages 48 to 83” (Cicetti, 2012). The findings of this study showed that eating “about an ounce of chocolate a month reduced [the] risk of heart failure by 32 percent” (Cicetti, 2012). On the contrary, eating more than an ounce a day eliminated this benefit. Another study that (Cicetti, 2012) looked at, showed that eating “moderate amounts of chocolate” also helps in lowering a person’s blood pressure (Cicetti, 2012). The final study looked at “more than 44,000 participants” and found that those who consumed chocolate on a weekly basis were “22 percent less likely to suffer a stroke” (Cicetti, 2012). Even though this source did not find a correlation between eating chocolate and weight loss, it provided other benefits of eating chocolate. Another article that supports this claim is that of (Hagan, 2013), which states that those who worry less about eating sweets such as chocolate cake are less likely to gain weight. To support his claim, (Hagan, 2013) looked at research done by Dr. Roeline Kuijer and Jessica Boyce in which “300 volunteers aged from 18-86” were quizzed “on their eating habits and whether they were trying to lose weight” (Hagan, 2013). One important question that the researchers asked the volunteers was if they...
